With only eight private chalets, Okonjima Bush Camp is a small and intimate camp situated on the border of the Waterberg Plateau Park, a remote wilderness area in northern Namibia. If you are interested in Africa's big cats, then this is the destination for you: Okonjima is a wildlife rehabilitation and research center and part of the AfriCat Project - dedicated to the preservation of leopard, cheetah, and other large Namibian carnivores. You will have the chance to observe their work with big cats and learn about their conservation efforts.
Rise early for self-guided mountain and sunrise walks or a game drive with an expert ranger. You can wander the reserve on your own along marked trails but make sure you have got your binoculars handy: birdwatching is a popular activity at Okonjima Bush Camp as over 300 species have been identified here. Two bird hides are within walking distance of the camp and in the evenings you can visit the night hide and - if your luck is in - observe rarely-seen nocturnal animals such as honey badgers, genets, and porcupines.
Highlights
Activities
Beautiful bush setting that will work well at either the end or start of your Namibian adventure. Be sure to spend some time watching the watering hole from the comfortable lounge area
Rooms
Chalet
The eight well-spaced chalets are a combination of earthy ochre walls and khaki-green canvas set under a thatched roof. The entire front of the chalet can be rolled up to allow both the cool breeze and the sounds of wild Namibia to enter. The en suite bathroom has a large shower and twin basins.
OTHER ROOM TYPES
The spacious Honeymoon Suite offers more privacy and features large glass sliding doors in front of the bed to provide beautiful wild vistas. There is a cozy lounge with a romantic fireplace and the en suite bathroom has a bathtub and outdoor shower for showering under the stars.
Facilities
The central open-sided lodge, which has high thatched ceilings and tasteful African décor, incorporates a sunken lounge area with a roaring fireplace, a bright and airy dining area, and a bar that leads out onto the extensive deck with a traditional fire pit.
The camp's swimming pool is ideal for cooling off in during the heat of a summer's day and, as the temperatures cool, sitting around the fire pit in the evening to swap stories and contemplate the starry night sky.
Dining
Early morning coffee and a light snack are provided before your first activity and a more substantial breakfast is served when you return.
Lunch is usually light and healthy while dinner is a delicious, beautifully presented 3-course affair.
Meals are served in the main dining area or under African skies. Make sure you order a pre-dinner drink from the bar and wander out onto the deck to enjoy the fiery Namibian sunset.
