Surrounded by gleaming floodplains and scattered woodlands, Duba Explorers Camp is the ideal base from which to discover the Okavango Delta. Set on an island in the remote northern reaches of the Delta, you will be at the heart of this extraordinary landscape and enjoy a further advantage in that the camp is located in a private concession to ensure maximum exclusivity for its guests.
Duba Explorers is the creation of Dereck and Beverly Joubert, renowned wildlife filmmakers and conservationists, and was built in partnership with the local community to ensure a mutually beneficial relationship. Expert Delta guides will open up the secrets of the Okavango on game drives and bush walks, as well as on motorboat and mokoro (canoe) safaris when water levels allow. The general game viewing and bird watching are excellent, and the area is known for rare sightings like wild dogs and leopards as well as sitatunga and roan antelope.
A small and intimate camp with only five luxurious suites, Duba Explorers would make a great treat for honeymooners and couples on a special journey. And although there is no specific family accommodation, the camp welcomes children aged eight and older and offers an array of age-appropriate activities from animal tracking and bird watching to cooking and painting. Open all year, Duba Explorer Camp combines well with other lodges in the next-door Moremi Game Reserve and heavyweight Chobe National Park.
Highlights
Activities
The quintessential Botswana safari experience is on offer at Duba Explorers Camp. Expect just five decadently furnished safari tents on raised decking, surrounded by pristine Okavango Delta wilderness. A full range of safari activities are on offer: from game drives and mokoro trips to guided walks and boating excursions. This should be your first choice when it comes to luxury tented accommodation, combined with excellent game viewing.
Rooms
Tent
There are only five tented suites at Duba Explorers Camp, each slightly raised off the ground on wooden decking with a magnificent view of an Okavango wilderness – plus a pair of comfortable chairs from which to enjoy it. Designed with a nod to safari’s 1920s heyday, the suites are elegantly furnished and extremely spacious. A large double or twin bed takes centre stage, draped in white netting and cooled by a floor fan. Walk to the back of the suit and you find an adjacent private bathroom complete with shower, sink and flush toilet.
Solar power gives you electric light in your tent as well as opportunities to recharge batteries; there is also complimentary limited Wi-Fi available in your suite and a tea and coffee station.
Facilities
Taking advantage of its island location, Duba Explorers Camp is centred around its communal area where you find an expanse of raised decking overlooking a grassy floodplain. Half of the deck is open-air, allowing you to bask in the warmth of a winter morning or gaze at a star-studded sky to the sound of supper being prepared. The other half is a covered area to provide shade or shelter when needed and is home to an honesty bar with a range of local and imported drinks.
Families with children will enjoy the age-appropriate activities on the Young Explorers Programme, and travellers in general will welcome the camp’s complimentary laundry service.
Dining
Served inside or outside on the main deck, meals at Duba Explorers Camp combine local ingredients and international tastes. The day begins early with tea or coffee and home-baked biscuits. Depending on the season, you may have a light breakfast before you leave and lunch on your return, or go out early and sit down to a hearty brunch mid-morning, away from camp.
Afternoon tea and cakes precede the second activity of the day, and you’ll enjoy cold drinks with sunset before returning to camp for a grand three-course dinner under candlelight. All dietary requirements are catered for – from regular to vegan, as well as children.
