As a privately-run wildlife reserve, the 120,000-hectare Sapi Concession is a leading example of African conservation-based tourism. Lying next to Zimbabwe’s legendary Mana Pools National Park, Sapi is a refuge for the big mammals of the Zambezi landscape like elephants, hippos, lions, rhinos, and buffalo. An area of abundant game and birdlife, this is a wild and remote part of Zimbabwe and is recommended for seasoned safari travelers looking for a unique and off-the-beaten-path wildlife experience.
A degree of adventurous spirit is essential for a stay at Sapi Explorers Camp. Set in the concession itself, the camp is unfenced and lies along a twist of the Zambezi River complete with snorting hippos and basking crocodiles. Game drives are only part of the offering: you can also explore on foot with armed rangers and paddle a canoe down the river. The standard of guiding is very high and you will be in the company of expert guides and local trackers as well as friendly hosts and lodge staff.
Sapi Explorers is a small camp – there are only five tents, each a large and welcoming suite with a private bathroom and views over the Zambezi. There is plenty of comfort and convenience at Sapi Explorers, and families with children over 12 will find much to see and do here.

Tented Suite
There are only five tented suites at Sapi Explorers Camp, each sleeping two and set on the banks of the Zambezi River. They are modeled on the ‘explorers’ accommodation of the past – large, roomy walk-in tents with their own en suite bathroom where you will find a traditional bucket shower and a modern flush toilet.
A large double bed (twin configuration is available), a writing desk, carpets on the floor and wooden furniture and art pieces to complete the mood. Electric lighting and a fan are among the comforts inside; outside you will find a private seating area with a pair of chairs and unbridled views of the Zambezi.
Facilities
Sapi Explorers Camp lies quite literally a stone’s throw from the Zambezi River; its large communal tent flows out onto soft beach sand and down to the river itself. This is where you will meet and socialize with fellow guests and enjoy your meals together, served either inside or outside depending on the weather. There are comfortable chairs and couches to relax in, reference books to use, and a small but well-appointed bar. You will also enjoy a complimentary laundry service, available daily, and there is a battery-recharging station at the main lodge.
Dining
You will begin the day early with tea and coffee and a light breakfast before your first safari activity, returning to a handsome brunch or lunch, depending on the season. Expect hearty, home-cooked dishes served inside or outside as the weather dictates. You can access tea and coffee throughout the day and look forward to chilled drinks and snacks at sunset. The evening dinner is a 3-course affair, served by firelight and with house wines.
All dietary requirements are catered for and the lodge is very flexible on meal times – you can even enjoy breakfasts and lunches served out in the bush away from camp.
