The eco-friendly and intimate Meno-a-Kwena safari camp is set at the confluence of two contrasting but equally beautiful Botswana’s worlds – the lush Okavango Delta and the rugged Kalahari Desert. This diverse landscape attracts a wider variety of wildlife than you might find in either one of the two ecosystems alone, so you can see savannah animals like cheetahs and wild dogs as well as desert specialists like meerkat and the regal black-maned Kalahari lion.
Daily safari activities take you into the heart of the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park where masses of zebra arrive to enjoy fresh grazing after the summer rains in December and January. The Kalahari springs to life and if the rains are especially good then the region’s vast salt pans fill up and attract myriad bird life including flamingos, waders, and wildfowls. The dry season – from about May to August - is equally thrilling as big games are easily found close to water sources. Meno-a-Kwena is ideally positioned to witness this phenomenon with its prime hilltop position overlooking the Boteti River, the life-giving channel running from the Okavango Delta into the Kalahari.
Highlights
Activities
This camp’s very special attraction is the views! Set on the high river banks, I was very happy to spend several hours sitting and watching the wildlife come down to drink at the river.
Rooms
Double Tent
The camp has just nine tented suites, each nestled among vegetation and hidden from other tents to offer the utmost privacy and tranquillity. The Boteti River meanders below and is visible from each suite, and you can step out onto your covered lookout area to soak up the picture-perfect vista, lounge on a comfortable day bed, and observe frequent wildlife visiting the river. Each well-appointed tent is constructed from canvas, local stone, and timber, and has an en suite bathroom with twin vanities, a flush toilet, and a traditional safari bucket shower.
Facilities
Meno-a-Kwena is a camp run according to the principles of sustainable tourism, and its organic architecture ensures that you have a truly authentic experience in this spellbinding Kalahari setting. The lodge is powered naturally by Botswana’s average of 291 days of sunshine a year and water is sourced directly from the Boteti River.
Attention to detail is present in handmade crafts that decorate the camp and colorful accents to reflect Botswana’s vibrant culture. An open-air communal area invites you to celebrate beautiful sunsets and opens onto an outdoor dining area. Beyond that, you can enjoy game viewing from the natural rock plunge pool, or find a secluded viewing tent for romantic private dining or taking in the exquisite river view. If you would like to get even closer to wildlife than you would on a game drive or from the lodge, a floating game viewing hide is located not far from camp. Additional facilities include a small library, a cozy bar tent, and a gift store.
Dining
Candlelit dinners are most often enjoyed alfresco, at a beautifully laid communal table for festive evenings spent under the sparkling night sky. The menu features wholesome and lovingly prepared home-style cuisine with plenty of hearty traditional dishes to try. All-day game drives are accompanied by delightful bush picnics in the wilderness of Makgadikgadi Pans National Park.
