Lying in a natural amphitheater of teak trees and facing a well-frequented waterhole, Verney’s Camp has another distinct advantage over other accommodations in Hwange: it lies in a private concession within the national park itself, enabling you to enjoy not just morning and afternoon drives in Zimbabwe’s flagship reserve but also spot-lit night drives and nature walks in the company of expert local guides.

Easily combined with a stay at Victoria Falls and comprising just 10 tented suites, the camp delivers an authentic safari experience for first-timers and safari regulars alike. Each suite has a waterhole view and plenty of comfort, including a private en suite bathroom with a shower. Two family tents cater to adventurous groups with older children.

There is an intimate and exclusive feel to Verney’s Camp. It is luxurious without being ostentatious and lies in a remote part of Hwange National Park that is little frequented by other visitors. It is a good choice for discerning safari travelers and honeymooners as well as wildlife photographers and bird watchers. The area is famous for its game sightings, especially of elephants, buffalo, and big cats – lions and leopards in particular. There is also excellent general game viewing of zebra, giraffe, wildebeest, and many antelope species plus superb bird watching, particularly in summer when the migrant species are in residence. And with the addition of night drives which are only permitted in the concession and not in the national park, guests at Verney’s stand the chance to see Africa’s more unusual nocturnal animals such as porcupines, bush babies, and eagle owls.

Luxury Tent

Verney’s Camp offers 10 tented suites, divided into eight double or twin rooms plus two family rooms. Set apart from each other for maximum privacy, each of the tents faces the in-house waterhole, enabling you to enjoy great game viewing from the comfort of your viewing deck.

Located at ground level and connected to the main lodge and each other by pathways, each suite sits on a raised wooden platform and is tucked into the shade of giant teak trees. Interiors are cool canvas with wooden furniture and a pleasing art piece or decorative detail to catch the eye. There is also an en suite bathroom with shower, flush toilet, and double vanity as well as fluffy towels and complementary accessories.

Verney’s Camp is built in a traditional safari style that comprises a central lounge and reception area with indoor and outdoor dining venues. Its remote location and careful, eco-friendly design come together to give you a comfortable stay without the frills.

Its communal areas are well-shaded and look out over a popular waterhole that attracts great numbers of elephants in the dry season, from about July to November.

Dining

You enjoy three meals a day at Verney’s, beginning with an early morning wake-up call and tea or coffee and homemade biscuits before your morning drive, returning mid-morning to a hearty-cooked brunch. Afternoon tea is served before your second game drive of the day, culminating - of course - with cold drinks and snacks out on the savannah. A 3-course meal is served in the evening, under the stars as often as possible, accompanied by house wines.

Verney’s takes care to vary the dining experience each night: all meals are prepared at camp, a selection of international dishes infused with local ingredients and an African twist.
