Nomad Kuro, Tarangire detail

Opened in 2014, this is one of Tanzania’s newest camps and a classic Nomad safari experience. Tucked away in a secluded area of Tarangire National Park, this is a good option for those wanting Nomad’s tried and tested combination of luxury, environmental awareness, and great guiding.

Nomad Kuro Tarangaire - The Facts

Most Tarangire lodges are located just outside the park, meaning a short drive before you get to the park proper, however, Kuro sits right in the heart of the action and in beautiful isolation.

Although the game density is not the same as the other Northern wildlife destinations like the Serengeti or the Ngorongoro Crater, it is serenity and peacefulness that draws us to Tarangire and Kuro. It is a beautiful park with few visitors. Those who do visit rarely stay long enough to get to the south-central region, where the few permanent lodges are.
Kuro has been designed to maintain this sense of isolation and wilderness, a must on any Tanzania safari. The main area blends well into its surroundings and there are only six stylish and comfortable tents, meaning you share this beautiful place with very few others.
The camp is designed, like all Nomad camps, to leave as small an environmental footprint as possible. The tents are decorated in classic neutral safari colours while the main area has a thatched grass roof. Each tent is ensuite with a bucket shower and eco-flush toilet.
Kuro has performed incredibly well as we had expected. Run by Nomad, who have some of the top lodges in Tanzania and Kuro is the only rival to Oliver’s in this lovely area of Tarangire.
Notorious for its huge elephant population that increases throughout the dry season, a stay in Tarangire is perfect at the beginning or end of a Northern itinerary for those who enjoy a safari of solitude. The meandering dry Tarangire River is beautiful to drive next to and the baobab-studded horizon is perfect for photo opportunities. Buffalo herds number in their hundreds and about ten percent of the park is also covered by an incredible swamp that attracts an abundance of animals (both prey and predators) during the heat of the day. The variety in landscapes also makes Tarangire is birders paradise, from the open plains to the swamp, there are hundreds of species to tick off here.
For those who want to experience the magic of walking safaris, Tarangire is the perfect place in Northern Tanzania to do so. Heading out with your armed guide and ranger, being on foot in the bush will allow you to explore and understand the smaller components of safari, from the mighty dung beetle to the tiny termite. With Tarangire's abundance of wildlife, do not be surprised to come across the park's bigger inhabitants.
The other specialty available in Tarangire is the availability of night drives. Heading out after dinner shows you a completely different Africa to the one you see by day and should not be missed. Lesser spotted animals like servals and aardwolves are all seen regularly on a Tarangire night drive making it a must for any safari enthusiast.
Unless you are a very keen walker, then a couple of nights in Tarangire is more than enough to suffice. Two nights provide plenty of opportunity to explore the different areas of the park and take part in a walking safari or a night drive.
