Lemala Kuria Hills Camp detail

Secluded between the boulders and kopjes of the famous Mara River in Serengeti National Park is a tented safari camp that not only offers splendid Big 5 and Great Migration viewing but is built according to the best practices in global sustainable architecture. Lemala Kuria Hills – named after the ancestral home of the local Kuria tribe – not only has vistas to the Kenyan border and across the golden Lamai grasslands but is also constructed with green building materials with a special concern for maintaining the natural integrity of the area.

Each of the 15 luxury tents (14 of which face the burnt orange sunset; one overlooks the sunrise) and are sited under mature trees, is built from reclaimed steel, glass, sustainable decking and composite canvas, with solar and wind power making it as carbon neutral as possible. They also house emperor (super-king) sized beds and private plunge pools for refreshing post-siesta dips.

Whether relaxing in the lodge’s elevated lounge, enjoying the expansive views over gently rolling hills, heading out on a game drive, or serenely floating over the Serengeti plains in a hot-air balloon, you can expect to be delighted by the game viewing and quieted by the peace and tranquillity of Kuria Hills.

Rooms

Tented Suite

The spacious 70m² double-roomed tents follow a contemporary decorative design while still maintaining a traditional safari camp feel. In keeping with the eco-conscious architecture, the sand-colored canvas, cotton and linens of neutral tones, and brown timber flooring echo the landscape.

Tents have grand emperor-sized beds and comprise a bedroom with en suite bathroom, sitting area with beautiful sofas and ottomans, dressing area, and a raised and shaded outside deck with an outside shower and private plunge pool. Bathrooms have double basins, with a shower and a separate slipper bath that is centered to capture the views.

Facilities

This opulent safari camp has been designed to have the smallest possible ecological impact without in any way comprising an unequivocally luxurious experience. Tents are built using recycled steel, glass, sustainable timber, composite decking, and canvas. Energy-efficient LED lighting and low-flow showerheads save further energy and water.

The camp’s cozy communal area is built on the ridge of the largest kopje and includes a bar as well as sitting areas decorated with local art. The dining area is communal with secluded tables, which are more private and ideal for couples wanting romance in the bush. The magnificent bar is undoubtedly the centerpiece and has been built over two levels to afford guests arguably the most commanding view in the Serengeti.

Refuge from the heat can be found in the cerulean infinity swimming pool and an outside deck with comfortable loungers provides a peaceful daytime retreat. A boma for under-the-stars dining is built against a giant rock face that is gloriously lit up at night to create intense shadows and a preternatural ambiance. Lemala Kuria Hills’ African therapy center – offering a full array of treatments including manicures, pedicures, and massages – is ideally positioned above the captivating plains to accentuate an already indulgent experience.

Dining

Meals are enjoyed at several unique locations, which are flexible according to your daily activities. Breakfast is either served in the dining area, where is it a delicious combination of continental and made-to-order items, or out in the rolling Serengeti plains among the animals for a truly unique dining experience. Lunch and dinner are three-course indulgences chosen from an a la carte menu.

Each course offers a choice of three plated dishes combining local Swahili and international flavors, like deep-fried ugali, a new twist on a local staple. High tea is served in the afternoons. Boma dinners, wood-fired pizzas, barbecues, teppanyaki, and wine tastings all form part of the camp’s culinary experience.
