Between December and March every year, the plains of northern Tanzania are alive with the thunderous rhythm of millions of migrating wildebeest and other game as they make a long, dusty, and dangerous journey to new grazing grounds. It is estimated that up to a quarter of a million who start this epic quest do not finish it: picked off by predators, drowned in rivers, or simply not strong enough for the stamina-sapping feat. Masek Under Canvas is an intimate and unpretentious tented camp that puts down roots near the path of the Great Migration to share with guests the splendor of this thrilling natural phenomenon.

The emphasis at Masek under Canvas is on experiencing the majesty of the Great Migration, with regular 4x4 game drives to see the thrilling action. In the morning, while the air is still cool and the buds are just beginning to unfurl, take a hot-air balloon to drift tranquillity over grazing herds, and watch the sun rise slowly and gently begin to spread its golden rays.

Trips to the area where the Laetoli footprints – which showed that humans walked upright on two legs as long ago as 3.6 million years – were unearthed and to Olduvai Gorge – the site of the oldest known ‘human’ tools – can also be arranged.

In the evening, after a night drive, guests congregate in the mess tent (which is lit by a generator rather than solar power) to play board games, charge their overworked camera batteries, and swap Migration stories.

Dining

Dine by a gas lamp as you gaze through the mosquito netting of the mess tent at the nocturnal wilderness beyond. Meals in camp are sit-down affairs, while bush breakfasts and game drive picnics can be enjoyed in the field. A warming fire is lit every evening and sundowners are savored while reflecting on the magnificent day that has been.
