Moonlight Tours Expedition – Tom’s Little Hide: An Exclusive Safari Experience in Hwange National Park

Located on the eastern boundary of Hwange National Park, Tom's Little Hide offers an intimate and exclusive retreat amidst one of Africa's most spectacular wildlife sanctuaries. Known for its majestic elephants and incredible biodiversity, Hwange is home to over 100 species of mammals and nearly 400 bird species, making it a prime destination for nature enthusiasts and safari lovers. The park’s sprawling 14,650 km² of wilderness provides a sanctuary for some of Africa’s most iconic creatures, including Africa’s largest elephant population.

Situated just a few hours' drive south of Victoria Falls, Tom’s Little Hide provides an exclusive escape into the heart of Zimbabwe’s largest reserve. In the comfort of your private tented suite, you’ll experience the thrill of waking up to Africa’s dawn chorus and falling asleep to the sounds of the bush. The accommodation overlooks a waterhole that attracts a variety of wildlife, offering guests the unique opportunity to observe animals at close range in an undisturbed, serene setting.

For an extraordinary safari experience, June to October is the ideal time, as the dry season makes wildlife viewing particularly easy, with fewer waterholes and more animals congregating around those that remain. However, the lush summer months hold their own charm, drawing different species and offering a quieter, more lush atmosphere.

Highlights:

  • Private & Secluded: Overlooks a prominent waterhole, offering a front-row seat to wildlife interactions
  • Intimate Experience: Limited to small groups and families with exclusive use of private dining areas, plunge pool, guide, and vehicle
  • Wildlife Abundance: Large populations of elephants, buffalo, and the elusive African wild dog
  • Guided Walks: Private walks available for guests over 16 years old
  • Diverse Landscapes: Experience teak forests, Kalahari sandveld, and mopane woodlands

Activities:

  • Game Drives: Explore Hwange’s wildlife-rich landscapes with your private guide
  • Night Drives: Witness nocturnal creatures in their natural habitat
  • Guided Walks: Immerse yourself in nature with expert-led walking safaris
  • Bird Watching: Spot a wide variety of bird species in this ornithologist's paradise

Rooms:

  • Deluxe Tent Suites: Tom’s Little Hide offers just three spacious, luxury tented suites, each featuring a verandah overlooking the main waterhole. The rooms are designed for privacy and comfort, with solid Zimbabwean teak furniture and a cooling fan for added relaxation. The suites are perfect for small groups or families, offering an inter-leading room ideal for children. The deluxe honeymoon tent also accommodates larger groups of up to 8 adults.

Each suite is equipped with an en-suite bathroom, including a bathtub, indoor and outdoor showers, double hand basins, and flush toilets. With plenty of hot water throughout the day, the bathrooms are a sanctuary in themselves. The rooms are mosquito-proofed for peace of mind, as the area is a low-risk malaria zone.

Facilities:

  • Relax & Unwind: Between thrilling safari adventures, enjoy peaceful moments by the plunge pool or on your verandah, watching the wildlife at the waterhole just meters away.
  • Safari Library: Swap books from The Hide’s collection to deepen your knowledge of the local wildlife or relax with a novel.
  • Cultural and Educational: For those interested in learning more, bird and animal guides are available for reference.

Dining:

At Tom’s Little Hide, dining is a memorable affair, often taking place around a communal table in Tom’s House. However, meals can be relocated to various scenic spots, such as an alfresco breakfast overlooking the waterhole or a traditional campfire dinner under the stars. The safari dining experience is complemented by impeccable service and delicious food.

Start your day with early morning tea and coffee delivered to your tent before heading out on a game drive or guided walk. Breakfast is a delightful spread of fresh fruit, pastries, and a hearty farmhouse meal, complemented by freshly brewed coffee. Throughout the day, enjoy refreshing tea breaks on your game drives and sundowners in scenic spots, followed by a delectable dinner at the camp.
