Palm River Hotel
Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Today, you will experience the "smoke that thunders" on your own or on a guided tour of Victoria Falls and the rainforest. If you have already done this on your first afternoon, you can choose from various other activities in and around Victoria Falls. These include a sunset cruise on the Zambezi River (morning or afternoon) or dinner cruise, a helicopter "flight of angels" over the falls, a canopy tour, white-water rafting, gorge swing and other adrenaline activities. You may enjoy lunch at one of several restaurants at your lodge or around Victoria Falls town. We recommend the Vulture Culture experience at Victoria Falls Safari Lodge or lunch overlooking Batoka Gorge at the Lookout Cafe. You will complete your day with dinner at either Palm River Hotel, Dusty Road or one of the other exciting restaurants around Victoria Falls, sharing stories of your day's experiences.
After breakfast, you will be transferred by road back to Victoria Falls Airport for a short, exciting flight over Hwange National Park to either Hwange National Park Airport or Umtshibi Airstrip. Here, you will have a relaxed game drive towards The Hide. The Hide is a delightfully appointed, intimate luxury tented camp in a private concession. The lodge and luxury tents overlook a large waterhole with a special viewing hide, providing a view of the wealth of wildlife that comes down to drink. Hwange National Park has well over 100 mammal species and 400 species of birds and is famous for its great herds of elephants, comprising a total population of over 30,000! After arriving at The Hide, enjoy a delicious lunch and then relax for the afternoon or head out on a game drive, sip on sundowners, and nibble on canapés on the edge of a waterhole. You will end your day with a delicious dinner before retiring to your tent to enjoy all the night sounds of this remote, fascinating park.
The Hide
You wake up to the sounds of birds and the smell of coffee as you prepare for an early morning game drive. During the game drive, you might walk in the area's magical acacia or teak forests in search of wildlife with your guide or visit Ngweshla and other waterholes. You can take the opportunity to walk with an armed guide, which will allow you to see, smell, hear, and touch the African savannah. In our fast-paced life, walking in the bush helps you slow down and absorb the wonder of Africa. Zimbabwe's guides are regarded as amongst the very best in Africa, and this walking experience with them should not be missed! Enjoy the early afternoon relaxing at the lodge before heading out on a late afternoon game drive. Afterward, you go back to the camp and have time to freshen up before enjoying snacks and drinks under the stars around the campfire. The resident chef will serve up a tasty 3-course dinner.
Once more, you wake early for a continental breakfast as you prepare for your early morning game drive. Today, your guide will take you on a different route, seeking out early morning predators and other wildlife. Enjoy possible rare sightings of sable and Roan antelope and bat-eared foxes. Enjoy another opportunity to walk with an armed guide, allowing you to see, smell, hear, and touch the African savannah. Savour the afternoon as you relax at the lodge before heading out on a late afternoon game drive, this time most likely to scenic Mbiza Pan, surrounded by ilala palm trees and a haven for large herds of elephants and buffalo, as well as giraffes, eland, zebra, kudu, baboons and predators such as lions, cheetahs, hyenas, and leopards. Return to camp in the early evening for campfire stories under the stars about the day's sightings. Savor your 3-course dinner while elephants gather at the waterhole, and relish your third night in Zimbabwe's largest national park.
After breakfast and an early morning activity, we will drive you to the nearby airstrip for your 1-hour flight to Lake Kariba. You will be met by a guide from Changa Safari Camp and take the short boat and road transfer to camp. Changa is ideally located on the shores of Lake Kariba in the Matusadona National Park. The camp and luxury tents enjoy prime vistas over the lakeshore where pods of hippos and crocodiles bask in the sun and myriads of birdlife are residents. Having been welcomed at Changa and enjoying a light lunch, you typically want an early afternoon siesta in your tent before venturing late afternoon for a boat cruise or guided game drive. Kariba's sunsets are regarded as some of the most spectacular in Africa, and what better scene to relish on a sundowner? After dusk, it is time to retreat into camp to freshen up and enjoy pre-dinner drinks and a sumptuous dinner as you look over the lake.
Changa Safari Camp
This morning, wake to the wondrous call of a fish eagle and honking hippo! Changa and Lake Kariba are the perfect places to enjoy a lie-in during this safari if you want to before strolling in for a hearty breakfast. Alternatively, a guided walk, game drive, boat cruise or fishing safari is available. The open shoreline is ideal for enjoying all of these activities, and, usually, large elephant bulls are roaming, along with hippos out grazing or sunning themselves. Lake Kariba is home to the feisty tigerfish, one of Africa's top fighting fish and a suitable challenge for the whole family. However, there are also many other species of fish in the lake, including catfish and tilapia, which are tasty, and no doubt your chef back at camp will prepare a meal for you of bream whether you catch it or someone else does! Large herds of buffalo traverse the lakeshores, and lion pride hungrily follow. This makes for exciting encounters you might be fortunate to watch firsthand.
It is day 8 of your safari, and after breakfast and the morning activity of your choice, it is time for the short, spectacular flight into Mana Pools National Park and John's Camp, your home for the next three nights. Mana Pools is named after the four main pools comprising the heart of this World Heritage Site and is often voted as one of Africa's top five national parks. The wildlife here congregates on the vast floodplains of this 50km stunning stretch of Zambezi River. The many close-up encounters with Mana's iconic elephant bulls, such as Boswell and Fred Astaire, lure travelers worldwide.
Having enjoyed a light, tasty lunch, take an afternoon siesta in your luxury tent overlooking the floodplain. Enjoy some treats at high tea late afternoon before embarking on an exciting afternoon game drive along the floodplain. Once more, the sunsets are superb, and take the time out to enjoy a sundowner on the edge of the Zambezi River.
John's Camp
We will wake you up early to enjoy a light breakfast, coffee, and the opportunity to venture out early on a game drive or guided walking safari, as early mornings offer excellent game viewing opportunities. The dense wildlife in Mana Pools foraging amidst majestic fig, albida, and sausage trees is high—there is always something to watch and enjoy, whether on foot or in your game-drive vehicle. This sanctuary is revered as one of the best parks to walk in Africa, with its open woodland, albida forests, numerous pans of water, and spectacular views over the Zambezi River and the mountains beyond. Herds of buffalo, hundreds-strong, pummel the floodplain in search of grazing in the dry months. There is a strong presence of lions, hyenas, leopards, painted dogs, and occasionally cheetahs, and their prey includes impala, eland, zebra, waterbuck, and kudu. After lunch, it is siesta time before a game drive and sundowners. After a hot shower and campfire drinks, enjoy a 3-course dinner.
After an early breakfast, head out with your guide for a guided walking safari or game drive. Apart from predators, the early mornings are a pristine time for photography in general and watching large troops of baboons at play, as well as possibly mongoose, jackal, warthogs and more. Your walking guide will often do "an approach" on a relaxed elephant bull in the mornings when it is cool, and it allows you to relish an exciting up-close encounter with these beautiful, majestic mammals. On foot, you take in the size perspectives of an elephant compared to yourself, and you hear, smell and feel so much more whilst walking. Back at camp, a delicious lunch, G&T or wine is served. Tonight, after your final game drive, perhaps it is your turn to sleep out on the John's Camp star bed!
You will enjoy an early morning guided walk or game drive on your last day of safari, depending on your departure time to Victoria Falls Airport. After a sumptuous breakfast, you will drive to the Mana Pools Airstrip to catch your flight to Victoria Falls or Harare Airport for your connecting flight back home.
