One of the most unique experiences in Tanzania and Africa entirely is the whale migration starting from the end of June to September. Mainly sported at Mnazi Bay in a huge number around the midst of August, the park is in the Mtwara district of Southeast Tanzania and extends to the border with Mozambique. The journey from Mtwara Town to Mnazi Bay spans approximately 30 kilometers and takes about 45 minutes by road. Meanwhile, Mtwara Town offers a glimpse into Swahili culture and a bustling local market, adding an authentic touch to coastal life in Tanzania. The area is considered to have globally significant marine biodiversity values and covers 650 square kilometers, of which 33% is on land. The park extends from the northern portion of the Ruvuma Estuary to Mnazi Bay, including the headlands of Ras Msangamkuu. This tour offers a marvelous and unique experience including seeing mangroves, rocky and sandy shorelines, mudflats, and salt pans, fringing coral reefs, lagoonal patch reefs, seagrass beds, three islands Namponda Mongo and Kisiwa Kidogo, and numerous small rocky islets. The Park is home to nesting grounds for Green and Hawksbill turtles, and a number of marine mammals have been seen in the area including migrating Humpback whales and the Indo-Pacific Humpback dolphin therefore there is a chance for visitors to spot these amazing underground water creatures. A large population of crab plovers led to the area being designated as an Important Bird Area (IBA) in 2001.
