Elewana Tortilis Camp Amboseli detail

Sharing a border with Amboseli National Park and with its private entrance into the park, Tortilis Camp is located in a hillside setting and shaded by the natural forest of Acacia tortilis thorn trees after which the camp is named. Designed in a manner that blends rustic style and modern amenities, this complete camp is renowned for its high standards of service and its superb views of the sunset over Mounts Kilimanjaro and Meru.

Tortilis Camp offers a wide range of activities, ranging from early morning and late afternoon game drives to guided game walks outside the game park led by a Maasai expert. Support the local community by visiting a local village, and meet and interact with the students of Esiteti Primary School. Alternatively, you can laze around the pool with a cocktail and enjoy the sounds of the wild.

Once you have had your fill of relaxing activities like birding and sundowners, head to the Amboseli Elephant Research Centre - founded by Dr Cynthia Moss - to learn more about efforts to save these intelligent and sensitive pachyderms.

Rooms

Family Tent

The Family Tent and the Private House share a large swimming pool – complete with its own private lounge area and sunbeds. The house has large windows for appreciating the expansive views to Kilimanjaro and an extended roof area.

Safari Tent

Tortilis Camp's 16 spacious tents are authentic canvas and thatch, and each leads from a bedroom with an expansive king-sized bed or generous twins, through a dressing area, and onto bathrooms with pressurized hot showers and flush toilets. Each tent is raised on a wooden deck and sheltered by a thatched roof that also shades the large veranda - ideal for an early afternoon siesta. There is a solid wall between the bedroom/dressing area of the tent and the bathroom section.

The bathrooms have 24-hour hot water and are fitted with iconic Kitengela glass amenities that are hand-blown in Nairobi.

Facilities

Tortilis Camp offers a wide range of activities, including early morning and late afternoon game drives, as well as guided nature walks in the company of a Maasai expert. Unwind with a massage treatment or indulge in an afternoon of birding.

Alternatively, you can laze around the pool with a cocktail and enjoy the sounds of the wild. The main swimming pool is surrounded by comfortable loungers and has its changing rooms and bar.

It is solar-powered, making it very eco-friendly (power and hot water are both available 24 hours a day).

There is Wi-Fi throughout the property.

Dining

The food at Tortilis Camp is an integral part of the camp's charm. Enjoy traditional northern Italian cuisine, based on recipes from the owner's family cookbook, complemented by delicious salads and herbs grown in the camp's kitchen garden. The day's menu consists of breakfast and lunch buffets, and an a la carte dinner. Dishes include pizza, lasagne, spaghetti bolognese, fresh perch, seared beef fillet, and chocolate roulade. All water, including that used for ice, is filtered. Tortilis Camp issues guests with a reusable metal water bottle, thus stopping 200,000 plastic water bottles from being sent to landfills every year.

When you are out on the afternoon game drive, enjoy the 'bitings' (as snacks are known in Kenya) that have been freshly prepared by the chef.

Tortillis Camp works closely with the African Beekeepers' Association and their resulting delicious honey is not only for sale in the safari shop but is also creatively incorporated into the menu.
