Maasai Trails Camp detail

Found in the northeast of the famous Maasai Mara lies the ‘Forest of the Lost Child’, otherwise known as the Loitas Forest. Spanning an epic 330km and found on the western edge of the Great Rift Valley, this lush indigenous forest is full of incredible flora and fauna. Discover the secrets of the forest from glimpses of sunlight through the towering canopies to seemingly unending vistas from glades found above the tallest treetops.

Unlike a standard camp or lodge experience, Maasai Trails Camp is a mobile camping adventure led by the finest local guides. The Loita Maasai will be your custodians along an epic journey of discovery; as a conservative tribe, it’s a unique privilege to traverse their homeland and learn about their traditions, ceremonies, and rites of passage. Slackpack through the sacred forest and to a hidden waterfall or combine several trails in a unique experience, your guides are only happy to accommodate.

Maasai Trails is the epitome of slow travel; creating time and space to soak in the environment while disconnected from technology. During your stay, a 4 x 4 African Bell Tent provides a warm, comfortable abode, complete with hot water bottles and bush bathrooms. A ‘mess tent’ provides a communal dining area when at camp.

Rooms

Tent

Each mobile camp is made up of several Dome Tents, which have been meticulously set up to ensure warmth and comfort. A bedroll and mattress provide a comfortable bed for the night with delightfully warm bedding and even a hot water bottle. While seemingly basic, the tents have every comfort you could need. A canvas wash basin and communal bathroom – with a shower - are also available.

As an immersive experience, each tent provides the perfect place to relax and rejuvenate after the day’s trails, all while listening to the expressive soundtracks of nature.

Facilities

Maasai Trails Camp is less of a place and more of an experience; as such, typical facilities are not needed. In addition to the sleeping tents and bush bathrooms, a mess tent for meal preparation forms part of the camp as well as two donkeys. While you may arrive with a more comprehensive bag, the trails work on slackpacking so a small daypack with water, snacks, a camera, etc. will accompany you during the day.

There is little to no phone service in the forest and lighting is all courtesy of a solar system found in each tent and around camp.

Dining

Dining is a communal affair at Maasai Trails Camp. During the day, a leisurely lunch is packed for a midday break with some tasty snacks in your daypack. In the evenings, a ‘mess tent’ churns out delicious, hearty fare after an unforgettable day on the trails.

Enjoy a refreshing bush shower and indulge in a cold drink of your choice while reliving the day with fellow travelers, and guides who are always willing to share stories.
