Set in the only exclusive-use area of Rwanda’s triumphant Akagera National Park, Magashi is an airy and spacious tented camp on the shores of Lake Rwanyakazinga – home to one of Africa’s highest densities of hippos.

Thanks to successful wildlife restoration operations and strict anti-poaching laws, Akagera has become the biggest protected wetland in Central Africa. After an absence of 20 years, lions were reintroduced to the park in 2015, followed by black rhinos in 2017. As a result, Akagera is once again a Big 5 safari park – but its impressive wildlife repertoire does not stop there! The park is also home to colossal crocodiles, giraffes, hyenas, and rare sitatunga antelope that love the water. Boasting almost 500 species of birds, including the perplexing stork-like shoebill (also known as whalehead), Akagera will delight even the most casual birdwatcher.

Magashi offers boat safaris on Lake Rwanyakazinga, an excellent way to view the area’s aquatic animals and water birds. And because the camp is located in Akagera’s only concession, guests can enjoy guided walks and thrilling night game drives. Fishing on the lake is also permitted on a catch-and-release basis throughout the year. Tented Room

Magashi offers six very spacious and airy tented suites with uninterrupted views over Lake Rwanyakazinga. Each tent features a contemporary interior equipped with a large bed, regal mosquito netting, and a lounge area. Bathrooms are en suite.

Facilities

Magashi Camp’s architecture and interiors show reverence for traditional Rwandan culture. The main area features a luxurious lounge, wine cellar, and dining and bar area. The expansive viewing deck is equipped with a sparkling swimming pool and a convivial fire pit.
