Horse Riding in Zanzibar

Zanzibar offers a unique and captivating horseback riding experience, set against the backdrop of stunning beaches, vibrant culture, and lush landscapes. The Zanzibar Horse Club, established in 2018, has grown significantly since its inception and now boasts a diverse range of horses and experienced staff dedicated to providing memorable riding experiences for guests of all skill levels.

Overview of Riding Experiences

The Zanzibar Horse Club provides various accompanying rides tailored to different preferences and abilities. Guests can enjoy:

  • Beach Rides:  These include 1- and 2-hour rides along the picturesque shores of Kendwa and Nungwi beaches. The rides are designed to accommodate beginners as well as more experienced riders who may wish to trot or canter along the beach.
  • Sunset Rides:  A popular option is the daily sunset ride from Kidoti at 5 PM, where riders can take in breathtaking views as the sun sets over the ocean.
  • Swimming with Horses:  This unique experience allows riders to swim alongside their horses during high tide, creating unforgettable memories.
  • Cultural Rides:  Riders can explore local villages, experiencing the rich culture of Zanzibar while enjoying horseback riding.

Facilities and Operations

The Zanzibar Horse Club operates from three stables located in Nungwi, Kendwa, and Kidoti village. The main facility spans 10 acres and includes training grounds, paddocks for resting horses, and areas for breeding mares and foals. During April and May, operations are temporarily closed for horse rest and vaccinations.

All rides are conducted under strict safety protocols; riders are required to wear helmets, long trousers, and appropriate footwear. There is also a weight limit for riders—90 kilograms at Nungwi Stables and 80 kilograms at Kidoti Stables—to ensure the safety of both horse and rider.

Booking Information

Riders can book their experiences online up to two months in advance. It is advisable to check tide schedules when planning beach rides since they are subject to tidal conditions. The club also emphasizes animal welfare by donating a portion of profits to local animal charities.

Conclusion

Horseback riding in Zanzibar is not just an activity; it’s an immersive experience that combines adventure with cultural exploration. Whether you’re galloping along pristine beaches or swimming with your horse in crystal-clear waters, the memories created here will last a lifetime.
