The Maasai Immersion Volunteer program offers participants an opportunity to engage deeply with the Maasai culture while contributing to community development efforts. Volunteers typically stay in traditional Maasai bomas, which are simple earth huts made from mud, sticks, grass, and cow dung. This accommodation provides an authentic experience of the Maasai way of life.

Accommodation Details  In Makuyuni Village, volunteers share bomas with one or two others of the same gender. Each hut is equipped with solar power, comfortable beds, and basic washroom/shower facilities. Although the conditions are rustic, they are clean and comfortable. Bedding is provided; however, volunteers need to bring their towels and toiletries. Wi-Fi is available at these accommodations.

In Arusha, before heading to Makuyuni Village and after completing the program, volunteers stay in dorm-style volunteer houses or homestays. The local team manages three volunteer houses suited for younger volunteers and two homestays favored by families or more mature individuals. These accommodations have running water and electricity but may experience power outages that affect hot water availability.

Meals Provided  Volunteers receive three meals a day during their stay. The meals typically include traditional Tanzanian dishes such as rice, ugali (maize porridge), chapatti, beans, and various meat and vegetable dishes. Special dietary requirements can be accommodated upon request; however, options like vegan or halal meals may not be available.

Volunteer Activities As a Maasai Immersion Volunteer, participants may engage in various activities aimed at supporting the local community. These could include teaching English in local schools, participating in healthcare initiatives focused on preventable diseases like HIV/AIDS and malaria, or assisting in community development projects that promote public health education.

Cultural Exchange  Volunteers also have the chance to immerse themselves in the rich cultural heritage of the Maasai people through direct interaction and participation in cultural practices. This exchange fosters mutual understanding between volunteers and the local community.
