Camp Xakanaxa detail

Camp Xakanaxa was one the first set up in Botswana’s mesmerising Okavango Delta. Today, it has a welcoming balance between old-school rustic charm and modern conveniences and, being fenced, is a good choice for families travelling with pre-teen children. It is also wheelchair-friendly and has four open-roofed Land Cruisers for game drives in Moremi Game Reserve, and three power boats for exploring the gentle reeded waterways of the Delta.

There are 12 twin-bedded Meru-style tents and a separate guide’s tent for those who bring along a personal tracker, guide or other staff. There is also one of the largest swimming pools in the Delta and a cosy fire pit for convivial sundowners.

As part of the laid-back atmosphere of Africa, Camp Xakanaxa has an ‘open bar’ where you can help yourself to your favourite tipple and the kitchen staff will be happy to prepare some local dishes if you want to extend your Delta adventure to your taste buds!

I particularly enjoy the variety of the safari experiences; while on a boat trip once we had to turn around as we could not get past the many hippos in the water! A true bush experience.

Rooms

Standard Tent

Accommodation at Xakanaxa Camp consists of 12 spacious, very comfortable safari tents set on wooden platforms, each with an en suite bathroom comprising a hot shower, flush toilet, hairdryer, toiletries and a wash basin.

The tents are tastefully furnished and overlook the Khwai River. Each has a private viewing deck with comfortable loungers and all rooms have safes, power points, reading lamps and ponchos in case of game-drive downpours.

Family Tent

The family tent at Camp Xakanaxa offers a two-bedroom, two-bathroom option for families. With a private deck and spacious open-plan lounge to gather in after a day of exploring the Moremi.

Facilities

The main lodge is made from local timber, reed and thatch and is positioned to overlook the Khwai River and Xakanaxa Lagoon. The area is made up of various comfortable lounge areas, a help-yourself bar and an elegant, open-sided dining area with an enormous communal dining table where guests assemble for meals.

These living areas spill onto an expansive wooden deck with idyllic views of the river. Private plunge pools and sun decks overlook the teeming Delta waterways, while a larger swimming pool brings the camp together for opportunities to spend lazy days in the sun. After dinner lounge around the campfire and watch myriad twinkling stars in the clear African night sky.

A safari shop stocks unique presents and holiday essentials.

Dining

The kitchen is renowned for its creative safari fare served with a Pan-African touch, all accompanied by South African wines. A light pre-drive breakfast consists of fruit, cereals and yoghurts while brunch on return is more substantial, with salads, pastas, cheese and other dishes on offer. After your siesta and before heading out again, nibble on sweets and savouries at high tea. Dinner is a 3-course affair, with the main course being a buffet.

Guests usually eat together at a long table in the main dining room but Camp Xakanaxa also caters individually for those wishing to dine in private. Be sure to ask for Lettie’s homemade melon jam for your toast!
