Hyena Pan Tented Camp detail

Hidden away in a private game concession, Hyena Pan Tented Camp is a good choice for travelers looking for an exclusive safari on the fringes of the teeming Okavango Delta. The camp lies in the Khwai River area, a famously game-rich region bordering the Moremi Game Reserve and year-round home to elephants, buffalo, and hippos as well as big cats, wild dogs, and, of course, the ubiquitous spotted hyena. Such a location means you can explore both the 350,000-hectare private conservancy and the Moremi on game drives, as well as enjoying activities in the concession such as spot-lit night drives and guided bush walks that are not permitted in Moremi.

Hyena Pan Tented Camp is a small and intimate accommodation consisting of only eight tented suites, each with a private bathroom. It is a relatively simple camp but comfortable and well designed; children over eight years old are welcome at camp although there are no specific facilities for them.

The emphasis at Hyena Pan is on flexibility and diversity – you can spend the whole day in Moremi (complete with a packed lunch), spend time observing wildlife close-up from the vantage of the camp’s ground-level photographic hide, or go bird watching on foot with an expert guide. One highlight is a night away from camp on a ‘sky bed’, an elevated and luxurious sleeping platform set over the water, making for an unforgettable experience in Africa.

Rooms

Twin Tent

The camp’s eight en suite tents offer simple but stylish comfort. Each is furnished with twin beds and has a private bathroom with gas-heated showers. Solar power takes care of the lighting and gives you your battery-charging station.

Each tent has plenty of storage space plus an electronic safe to store your valuables. There is also a small outdoor area with chairs for you to sit and enjoy the view.

SKYBEDS

Hyena Pan Tented Camp offers you a truly unforgettable night in one of its sky beds. Located well away from camp and overlooking an active, well-frequented waterhole, these five elevated sleeping platforms sit five meters / 15 feet above the ground and consist of two levels: a bathroom on the lower floor and a bedroom under the stars on the upper deck with views over the waterhole. There is also a simple dining area and campfire where you can sit and absorb the sights and sounds of Africa at night.

With such spectacular skies overhead, you could be forgiven for forgetting about what’s happening on the ground. Sightings could include wild dogs, lions, elephants, and hyenas! Don’t forget to keep an eye (and ear) out for elephants, eland, zebra, and kudu, and an assortment of smaller nocturnal species, such as porcupines, bush babies, genets, jackals, and honey badgers.

Accessible from both Hyena Pan Tented Camp and sister accommodation  Sable Alley Lodge, the sky bed experience is one enjoyed under the watchful eye of your professional guide who accompanies you to camp and does the cooking and hosting for you.

Facilities

Hyena Pan Tented Camp is a simple but comfortable accommodation built around the main lounge, bar, and indoor and outdoor dining areas. There are two outdoor seating areas with views over the waterhole as well as a small reference library, and a plunge pool complete with sundeck and comfortable loungers. The camp is solar-powered and has charging points for batteries and Wi-Fi Internet access in the main lounge.

One of the camp’s best facilities is its private waterhole; illuminated at night for dramatic nocturnal wildlife sightings, it comes complete with a ground-level hide for unbeatable close-up photography and animal observations.

Dining

All meals and a selection of cold drinks, local beer and wine plus tea and coffee are included in the fully inclusive rate at Hyena Pan Tented Camp. All meals are served communally at the main camp unless by special request.

Your day begins early with tea, coffee, and a light breakfast before your morning game drive after which you return to camp for lunch. Afternoon tea is served at about 3 pm, after which you enjoy your second safari activity, complete with sunset drinks and snacks. Returning to camp, you savor fireside drinks before sitting down to a 3-course meal served – weather permitting – under the stars.
