Kenya is a land of contrasts, where ancient traditions meet modern innovations and diverse ecosystems coexist harmoniously. On this unforgettable safari, you will explore Kenya’s iconic Laikipia plateau and the Masai Mara. You will encounter rare and endangered wildlife in Laikipia, such as rhinos, elephants, and the long-necked graceful gerenuk antelope. You will also learn how local communities work with conservationists to protect these precious animals and their habitats. The majestic Mount Kenya, Africa’s second-highest peak, makes a dramatic backdrop to your safari here. Continuing north, the stunning landscape and diverse wildlife offering of Samburu National Reserve await, providing an immersive blend of culture and wilderness. From Samburu, you will fly to the Masai Mara, a vast savannah teeming with life. You will see pride of lions, elephant herds, cheetahs, leopards, and more. If you’re traveling between July and September, you might be lucky enough to witness the Great Migration. This natural phenomenon occurs as a year-round cycle between the Masai Mara and Serengeti when millions of wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle cross the Mara River in search of greener pastures. This is one of the most spectacular sights in the natural world and a thrilling experience for any wildlife lover.
You will stay in hand-picked boutique camps throughout your safari, offering comfort, warm and genuine service, and authenticity. Drive to Laikipia
If you are starting your safari at Ol Pejeta Conservancy, you will set off by road and drive for approximately five hours through flower farms and vibrant market towns. If you are heading to Borana Conservancy, you will be driven to Wilson Airport for your light aircraft flight to Lewa Airstrip. Once you reach your respective conservancy, you will be taken on a game drive back to camp, where you will arrive in time for lunch. At Ol Pejeta Bush Camp, you can enjoy game drives in search of lions, buffalo, elephants, white rhinos, black rhinos, and much more. You will also visit the enclosure for endangered species and meet the world’s last two remaining Northern White rhinos. The rangers will brief you on the remarkable work being done to save the species from extinction and protect other species here. A visit to the canine anti-poaching unit is highly recommended, meeting the dogs and trainers and putting the dogs’ skills to the test.
At Borana, you can immerse yourself in various exciting activities such as game drives, invigorating walking safaris, horse riding, or camel safaris, as you discover the wildlife-rich Lewa-Borana Conservancy. You have a good chance of seeing white or black rhinos here, as well as big cats, elephants, and species unique to northern Kenya, such as Grevy’s zebra and reticulated giraffe.
Accommodation: Ol Pejeta Bush Camp or Borana
Transfer to the next stop on the safari
From Ol Pejeta, you will set off by road for the Samburu National Reserve, driving approximately four hours around the north of Mount Kenya. In the afternoon and the following day, explore on game drives in this entirely different landscape. The earth here is rust red, noticeable in the color of the elephant that takes dust baths, helping them stay cool in the day’s heat. Palm trees, flowing rivers, and hills make it a beautiful reserve and one full of wildlife to uncover.
From Borana, you will fly by light aircraft to the Matthews Mountain Range and game drive the final part of the journey to camp. This is one of Kenya’s most unique and beautiful wilderness areas, with many activities to enjoy during your stay, including time spent with the beautifully adorned Samburu people, witnessing the age-old traditions of the singing wells, or visiting the community-run Reteti elephant orphanage.
Accommodation: Elephant Bedroom Camp or Sarara
Embark on a game drive to the airstrip and take a flight to the Masai Mara to begin the final leg of your Kenyan safari adventure. Your guide will meet you and introduce you to the magic of the Masai Mara, which is renowned as one of Africa’s most rewarding safari destinations for good reason. Along the way, you can stop to enjoy big cat sightings or other wildlife while en route to the camp, where lunch and a warm welcome await you.
Both camps are situated in a conservancy, ensuring an unspoiled and uncrowded experience with wildlife, as well as additional activities such as walking safaris, balloon flights, and community visits. Throughout the year, you can discover various animals in the vast savannah plains, from lion pride lounging to cheetah stalking gazelle in the long grass and pods of hippo splashing in a river. Salute the setting sun with a sundowner before returning to camp for dinner.
