Southern Serengeti

Southern Serengeti

The Southern Serengeti is a vital region within the Serengeti National Park, renowned for its rich biodiversity and significant wildlife migrations. This area is characterized by rolling, tree-studded grassy plains that provide an essential habitat for various species, particularly during the wet season from December to April.

Wildlife Migration and Seasonal Highlights

During the green season, from December to April, the Southern Serengeti becomes a focal point for one of nature’s most remarkable events: the Great Wildebeest Migration. This period sees colossal herds of wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle congregating in the southern plains to graze on fresh grass and give birth. The nutrient-rich short grass plains are ideal for these herbivores as they build their strength after the rain. It is estimated that around 8,000 calves are born daily during this time, creating a dramatic scene filled with life and predation.

Predators such as lions, leopards, cheetahs, and hyenas take advantage of this abundance of prey. The high density of prey animals attracts these predators to the area, making it an excellent location for wildlife viewing. Cheetah densities peak as they follow the migratory Thomson’s gazelles onto the southern and eastern plains.

Dry Season Dynamics

As the seasons change from June to November, many animals disperse across different regions of the Serengeti due to reduced water availability and food sources. However, some resident herbivores remain in the Southern Serengeti year-round. Species like Grant’s gazelle and giraffe can still be spotted in this area throughout the dry season. While predator sightings decrease during this time compared to the wet season, a few lion pride remain in locations such as Ndutu and Naabi Hill.

The landscape transforms into a semi-desert environment during these months; however, it still supports various wildlife species that have adapted to survive in harsher conditions.

Key Locations within Southern Serengeti

  1. Lake Ndutu:  This area is particularly famous for its role during calving season when female wildebeests give birth en masse.
  2. Kopjes:  These rocky outcrops serve as vantage points for predators like lions and leopards while also providing unique microhabitats for various other species.
  3. Masek Lake:  A perennial lake that attracts diverse wildlife even during drier months.

Overall, visiting Southern Serengeti offers an unparalleled opportunity to witness one of Earth’s most spectacular natural phenomena—the Great Migration—while also enjoying diverse ecosystems year-round.
