Kenya is full of conservation success stories but one of the greatest is that of the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy in the foothills of Mount Kenya. This 62,000-acre stretch of land is a haven for some of the country’s most endangered and unusual species, like the beautiful Grevy’s zebra and magnificent black rhino. Lewa Wilderness Lodge is an ideal base from which to explore this undulating landscape in search of not only the major mammals but also other sought-after sightings like the pink-lidded Verreaux’s eagle owl.

Tracing its current history back to 1924, the lodge is centered on the original farmhouse of the storied Craig family. Still owner-run, the Craigs are involved in all aspects of Lewa and, together with their exceptional guiding team, ensure guests understand how education and social welfare have a positive impact on conservation.

With lovely large rooms and comfortable areas to relax in, this owner-run and managed property is a home away from home. One of the few lodges in the area to offer unique experiences like horseback or camel safaris.

Standard Room

There are nine thatched cottages for guests, each with fireplaces in the sitting areas and verandas to soak up the spectacular views. All the furniture is handmade on-site by local craftsmen, adding to the considerable charm of your accommodation.

Each room has a mini-bar, generator-powered lighting, and power outlets for charging cameras and mobile phones. Unusually, small, travel-sized hairdryers can be used but management must be informed first so arrangements can be made to accommodate them on the limited power supply.

Facilities

Lewa Wilderness Lodge is packed with things to do when you are not out on game drives. On chilly days, snuggle up in the large sitting room next to the blazing fireplace or play a few games of darts. On hot days, head to the salt-water infinity swimming pool or tennis court.

Active or adventurous guests will enjoy horse riding, camel trekking, time in the gym, fly-camping or nature walks. There are about 40 horses in the stables, suitable for novice and experienced riders (English saddles are provided). For a special occasion, book a flight in the vintage biplane to see Lewa from the skies. Cultural village and school visits, as well as time with the tracker dogs, can all be arranged as can excursions to prehistoric sites.

At the end of the day, soothe your body and mind with a calming massage. There is a limited Internet service available that is billed to your account. Private chartered flights can land at the Lewa Downs airstrip.
