Arusha, located in northern Tanzania, is a prime destination for horseback riding enthusiasts due to its stunning landscapes and rich wildlife. The area offers various horseback riding experiences that cater to all skill levels, from complete beginners to advanced riders.
Location and Accessibility The horseback riding tours typically take place at Dolly Estate, situated on the Usa River (MajiYa Chai), approximately 40 minutes from Arusha Town and about an hour’s drive from Moshi. This location is at an altitude of 1400 meters above sea level, providing an ideal climate for both horses and riders. The estate boasts breathtaking views of Mount Meru and, on clear days, Mount Kilimanjaro.
Tour Options Riders can choose between morning and afternoon rides. Morning rides usually depart at 0930 hours, while afternoon rides leave at 1530 hours. Each ride lasts around two hours but can vary depending on the pace of the group. These tours are designed to accommodate different riding abilities; beginners can enjoy gentle hacks along wider paths where they might see wildebeests and antelopes grazing, while more experienced riders can explore narrower trails that offer opportunities to spot a variety of wildlife.
Wildlife Experience
One of the highlights of horseback riding in Arusha is the chance to observe local wildlife up close. Commonly seen animals include zebras, various antelope species, and the elegant Gerenuk. Experienced guides lead these tours, ensuring safety while also providing insights into the local ecosystem and wildlife.
Safety Measures Before mounting a horse, participants are required to sign an indemnity form. Riders are advised to wear long trousers and closed shoes with a small heel for safety reasons. Helmets are provided for all participants.
Additional Activities For those interested in combining their ride with other activities, options such as lunch or sundowners at a nearby polo club can be arranged. This adds an extra layer of enjoyment to the experience as riders can relax after their ride while taking in the beautiful surroundings.
In summary, horseback riding in Arusha offers a unique way to explore Tanzania’s wilderness while enjoying breathtaking views and encountering diverse wildlife.
